This tool is designed for the layout step of an interior board and batten or vertical trim wall. Enter the finished width of one uninterrupted wall section, the actual face width of the battens and either a target clear gap or an exact batten count. The calculator balances the pattern and gives you practical marks for installation instead of leaving an odd leftover space at the far end.

Measure the installed face width of the trim you will actually use. Nominal lumber names and store descriptions do not always match the visible width that occupies space on the wall.

Clear gap and on-center spacing are not the same measurement

The clear gap is the visible opening from the right edge of one batten to the left edge of the next. Center-to-center spacing runs from the centerline of one batten to the centerline of the next, so it equals the clear gap plus one batten width. The calculator reports both because clear gap is useful for visual planning while center marks are often faster to transfer with a tape measure and level.

Choose target spacing or lock the batten count

In Target clear gap mode, the entered spacing is a design goal rather than a forced dimension. The calculator tests nearby whole-number layouts and selects the one whose exact equal gap is closest to that target. In Fixed batten count mode, the number of battens stays unchanged and the calculator divides the remaining wall width evenly among the required spaces.

Worked example: a 10 ft accent wall

A wall section is 10 ft wide, the battens are 2.5 in wide, and the target clear gap is 12 in. A batten will sit at each outside edge. What layout fits evenly?

Answer: Ten feet equals 120 in. A nine-batten layout uses 22.5 in of trim, leaving 97.5 in of open wall. Nine battens create eight internal gaps, so 97.5 ÷ 8 = 12.1875 in. The exact clear gap is therefore 12.1875 in and the center-to-center spacing is 14.6875 in.

Explanation: The exact gap is slightly larger than the 12 in target because the wall has to be filled with a whole number of equal-width battens. Recalculating the gap prevents the last bay from becoming visibly narrower or wider.

Use the layout marks instead of chaining measurements

Open the detailed calculation to see the left edge, center and right edge position for every batten. Measure every mark from the same reference side of the wall. This is generally safer than measuring one gap, moving to the next batten and repeating the process, because a small pencil or tape error can otherwise accumulate by the time you reach the opposite side.

The calculator keeps the layout math at full precision and rounds only the displayed measurements. For a long wall, make the final end check before fastening every piece permanently.

Should doors, windows and built-ins be subtracted?

For spacing, a large interruption is often better treated as a boundary rather than simply subtracted from one long wall width. A full-height door casing, fireplace surround, cabinet run or deep niche can visually restart the pattern. Calculate each uninterrupted span separately unless you specifically want the batten rhythm to continue through the interruption. Small outlets and switches normally do not change the geometric spacing; they affect cutting and placement during installation.

Optional material-length estimate

Wall height is intentionally optional because it is not needed to solve spacing. Enter the vertical batten height only if you also want a preliminary linear-foot or linear-metre estimate. The advanced settings can add full-width horizontal rails and a material allowance for cuts. This total is useful for early shopping, but stock-board quantity still depends on the lengths actually sold and on how efficiently offcuts can be reused.

  • Dividing the full wall width into spaces without first subtracting the width occupied by the battens
  • Using center-to-center spacing as though it were the visible clear gap
  • Planning from a nominal trim size instead of measuring the actual face width
  • Rounding each bay separately and allowing the rounding error to build across the wall
  • Ignoring how the outside battens meet baseboard, crown, casing or an adjacent wall
  • Treating several visually separate wall sections as one continuous span
  • Buying material from the spacing result alone without accounting for cuts, defects and stock lengths

What spacing looks best for board and batten?

There is no single best spacing for every room. The wall width, batten width, ceiling height, nearby doors and furniture all change the proportions. Start with the look you want, enter a target gap, and compare the nearest balanced layouts before marking the wall.

Does batten width affect the spacing calculation?

Yes. Every batten occupies part of the wall width. The calculator subtracts the combined batten width first and divides only the remaining open width into equal gaps. Using the wrong trim width changes every gap in the layout.

Can I use this for exterior board and batten siding?

The spacing geometry can be used as a layout reference, but this calculator is primarily intended for decorative wall trim. Exterior siding requires additional decisions about board coverage, overlaps or reveals, flashing, fastening, drainage, openings and manufacturer installation requirements that are not included in this result.

Why is the exact gap different from my target?

A target gap is only an approximate design preference. The final wall must contain a whole number of battens, so the remaining width is redistributed evenly. A small change in the exact gap is usually what makes the two ends of the wall finish symmetrically.

Before you start fastening trim

  1. Measure the finished wall span again after baseboard, casing or other boundaries are established.
  2. Lay out the first, last and a few middle battens with light pencil marks or painter's tape.
  3. Check the composition from normal viewing distance before cutting the full batch.
  4. Use a level or laser to transfer vertical lines rather than assuming the wall corner is perfectly plumb.
  5. Locate wiring, plumbing and suitable fastening points before drilling or nailing.
  6. Confirm the last batten or end gap lands where the calculation predicts before permanent installation.

It does not determine structural fastening, substrate suitability, hidden services, fire requirements or exterior weatherproofing details. Follow the trim, adhesive and fastener instructions appropriate for your wall construction.

How to use the final result

Use the batten count and exact clear gap to approve the overall look, the center-to-center value for repeated measurement, and the detailed position table when you want direct marks from one wall edge. If the nearest automatic layout does not look right, change the target gap slightly or switch to a fixed batten count and compare another design before buying material.
