Five measurements control the grout quantity

Tile grout does not cover the face of the tile. It fills thousands of narrow channels around the tile edges. The required amount therefore depends on the tiled area, both tile dimensions, joint width and the depth actually filled with grout.

  1. Enter the total area to be grouted.
  2. Use the nominal length and width of one tile.
  3. Enter the planned joint width.
  4. Estimate the filled joint depth, normally close to the tile thickness.
  5. Open Advanced settings only when you need to change allowance, density, package size or cost.

For an early estimate, the tile thickness is a practical stand-in for joint depth. For a final order, check how deeply adhesive or bedding material occupies the joints.

The default density of 1.6 kg/L is a neutral planning value, not a specification for every cementitious, epoxy, resin or premixed grout. Replace it when the manufacturer publishes a product-specific density.

The calculation path from joints to bags

  1. Calculate the theoretical joint volume per square metre or square foot.
  2. Multiply joint volume by mixed grout density to obtain a weight-per-area rate.
  3. Multiply that rate by the project area.
  4. Add the selected overage allowance.
  5. Divide by package weight and round up to a whole package.
  6. Calculate purchased weight, estimated leftover and optional total cost.

How much grout is needed for 20 m² with 300 × 600 mm tiles, 3 mm joints, 9 mm joint depth, density 1.6 kg/L and 10% overage?

Answer: The theoretical rate is about 0.216 kg/m². The project requires about 4.32 kg before overage and 4.75 kg after overage, so one 5 kg package is sufficient.

Explanation: The calculated leftover is approximately 0.25 kg. Site losses, textured surfaces and inconsistent joint depth can reduce that margin.

What is the estimate for 150 ft² of 12 × 24 in tile with 1/8 in joints, 3/8 in filled depth, 10% overage and a 10 lb bag?

Answer: The estimate is about 7.32 lb before overage and 8.05 lb after overage. One 10 lb bag should cover the entered area under the assumed density.

Explanation: A change in actual joint depth or product density may move the requirement closer to the package limit, so the manufacturer’s coverage chart remains an important final check.

Coverage per bag is a result, not a universal product number

A bag does not have one fixed coverage for every project. Coverage expands when tiles are larger and joints are narrower or shallower. It contracts rapidly for mosaics, quarry tile, thick tile and wide joints. The calculator reports theoretical coverage for the exact geometry entered rather than presenting one generic square-foot or square-metre figure.

Round weight into a realistic purchase quantity

Retail grout is sold in complete bags, boxes, pails or tubs. The calculator rounds the required weight upward, then shows the total purchased weight and estimated leftover. This is more useful than displaying a theoretical decimal quantity that cannot be ordered.

A mosaic installation needs 6.34 kg after overage. How many 5 kg bags should be purchased?

Answer: Two bags are required, providing 10 kg in total and leaving an estimated 3.66 kg if the theoretical consumption is achieved.

Explanation: Changing to a different available pack size may reduce leftover. Compare package combinations before buying, especially for expensive epoxy or specialty grout.

The physics is unchanged when the unit system changes. Values are converted internally before the grout volume and weight are calculated. A tonne, gallon or regional package convention is not assumed; the user enters the actual package weight shown by the supplier.

When a generic estimate needs extra caution

  • irregular handmade tiles with varying joint widths;
  • deeply textured, porous or unsealed tile surfaces;
  • pebble mosaics and installations with non-rectangular pieces;
  • partially filled joints or heavy adhesive intrusion;
  • epoxy, resin or premixed products with unusual density;
  • repairs where the old grout is removed to inconsistent depths;
  • multiple tile sizes used in the same area.

Manufacturer calculators, coverage tables and technical data for the exact product take priority over a generic geometry-based estimate. Actual coverage also changes with workmanship, cleaning method, tile texture and site conditions.

Quick pre-purchase check

  1. Confirm that the grout supports the selected joint width.
  2. Check suitability for floors, walls, showers, pools, external use or heated floors as applicable.
  3. Compare the calculated kg/m² or lb/ft² with the product coverage chart.
  4. Enter the package weight actually stocked in the required colour.
  5. Add a realistic allowance—commonly 5–10%, and more where cuts, texture or cleanup losses are substantial.
  6. Buy colour-sensitive material from a consistent batch where the manufacturer recommends it.
  7. Follow the specified water ratio, mixing time and cleaning sequence.

This calculator estimates quantity, package count and optional cost. It does not select grout chemistry, colour, sealers, movement-joint treatment or compatibility with moisture-sensitive stone.
